GEMS Project Directors:
The following faculty and education professionals will also support GEMS Fellows and teachers in their content and pedagogy:
In each participating elementary school GEMS will assemble a school team composed of one mathematics Fellow, two elementary mathematics teachers (grades 4 and 5), one science Fellow, and two elementary science teachers (grades 3 and 4). These school teams will spend two weeks (July 26 to August 6, 2004) developing and improving inquiry-based lessons using curricula adopted by JCPS and the school (Investigations in Number, Data, and Space, Delta Science Modules II, Full Option Science System, and/or Science and Technology for Children.) Prior to the school teams workshop Fellows will spend two weeks (July 12 to 23, 2004) learning about state and national standards in K-12 mathematics and science, as well as communication and pedagogical skills for interacting positively in an elementary classroom.
During the school year each Fellow will assist two teachers with their inquiry-based instruction in mathematics or science. GEMS Leadership and support personnel will visit the classrooms on a regular basis. Also, GEMS seminars will be held approximately twice a month (on Monday nights) to provide ongoing support for school teams and to perform occasional evaluation activities.
