Applying for a GEMS Fellowship
Fellowship Eligibility Criteria:
- Be accepted into a UofL graduate program in Chemistry,
Mathematics, or Physics for 2008, or be a 5th year M. Eng. student
during 2008-9.
- Have a 3.0 GPA.
- Be a U. S. citizen, U. S. national, or permanent resident in the
U. S.
- Available July 16 – 18 and July 28 – August 5, 2008, for a summer
training/workshop; also available 10 hours per week to teach
collaboratively in a JCPS middle school, and 3:30 to 5:30 every other
Monday night during Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 for GEMS seminars.
Applying for GEMS Fellowships
Applicants should prepare a portfolio with the following:
- A completed Application Form
- Transcripts of both graduate and undergraduate work.
- Two or three letters of recommendation addressing your content
knowledge and your suitability for supporting middle school teachers
and students as they teach and learn mathematics or science.
- A 750-1000 word essay stating why you believe you are an
excellent candidate for a GEMS Fellowship.
- Applicants that have previous GTA or SI experience should provide
copies of University-conducted evaluation results of that experience.
- Graduate students who have a thesis advisor must also provide a
letter from that advisor agreeing to your participation in GEMS.
Portfolios should be submitted by February 29 to the GEMS faculty member for your
department:
Mathematics: Dr. Wiley Williams
Chemistry: Dr. Christine Rich
Physics: Dr. Bill Hoston
M. Eng.: Dr. Jim Watters
Selection of Fellows
The respective department faculty will pre-evaluate portfolios to
insure that eligibility requirements are met and items 1) - 6) above
are provided. The GEMS Fellows Selection and Mentoring Board will
review those portfolios submitted by the departments and schedule
interviews (tentatively March 18 – 19) with promising candidates.
Fellowship offers will be extended by March 28.
Students will be required to accept or reject a Fellowship offer by April 4.
